Love’s fourth and final album for Elektra Records, released in 1969, finds a very different lineup pushing the band in a new direction. Four Sail leaves behind the lush orchestral and acoustic arrangements of Forever Changes and leans into something tougher and more immediate.
What you get instead is raw garage-band energy, acid-rock guitar workouts, and driving blues-infused rhythms. Arthur Lee sounds especially locked in here, with a vocal delivery on Robert Montgomery that feels urgent and razor-sharp, a striking shift from his earlier gentle baroque-pop styling.
